KABUL (SW) – The minister for the Ministry of Public Works survived vote of confidence in the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Saturday.
Minister Yama Yari was summoned by the house over failure to utilize enough of the development budget. Up to 60 members of the house voted for and 34 members voted against the minister.
Addressing the house, he said the MoPW has spent up to 97.5 per cent of its development budget this year while as last year this spending stood at 62 per cent. Yama Yari said lack of capacity, penetration of mafia groups in development projects, poor management and regulation of highway remains top obstacles.
He added on top of these issues, the MoPW has managed to spend AFN 600 million in the current fiscal year so far.
The house is set to summon a number of other ministers as well over the budget utilization issue.
