MAZAR-I-SHARIF (SW): More and more women in Balkh province are testing and polishing their skills with the art of painting and sketching.
Hafiza Mohammadi, a 23-year-old woman, is the force behind a new center for arts in the province that has been welcomed by so many eager women and girls. She said free training is provided to interested ladies here. She mentioned previously not many females were feeling comfortable about going to an art school because of the fact that only male instructors were training interested candidates there, but now this center has provided them with a suitable option with which they are comfortable.
Women who have enrolled themselves for classes here said their families and the whole society seems to be accepting this new change. Hadisa Ahmadi, a woman artist in Balkh, said people’s mindset has changed, they no longer deter their daughters or sisters from joining art classes. Adina Gharib, another artist, said the new generation is more open minded. “Most women spend their lives staying at home all the time”, added Gharib.
The women painters believe they can easily express their feelings through the art of painting.
Saleh Mohammad Khaliq, provincial director of information and culture, called the surge of women interested in art of painting quite beneficial.
