KABUL (SW): In connection with the International Day of Peace, the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Wednesday called upon the Taliban to give-up armed resistance and join peace process.
Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, speaker of the house said in his remarks that Afghanistan has been a battleground for regional country’s proxy wars for too long, and the Afghans have paid so many sacrifices. He said that the government’s armed opponents, a phrase used for the Taliban, should realize the ground realities and join the peace process in line with the national interests of Afghanistan.
He expressed optimism about the proposed peace deal with the Hezb-e-Islami. Ibrahimi stressed that same should be replicated with other armed groups.
Also on Wednesday, Yasir Ahmadzai, director of the Peace Institute in Kabul, told a gathering that all political parties should strive for peaceful resolution of the armed conflict in Afghanistan. He emphasized that the efforts for peace should be given due priority, and called upon Gulbudin Hekmatyar, the chief of Hezb-e-Islami party to work for the welfare of the country.
