KABUL (SW) – The Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Tuesday failed to resolve the crisis in connection with the election of the house chairman.
On Monday, a number of members expressed hope the lingering issue would be resolved today.
In today’s session, it was decided the MPs can either cast open or even secret ballot on the fate of a disputed vote in connection with the election of the new chairman. Though, there seemed a consensus among the MPs over this format, yet the session concluded today without a decision.
It was said that the camp of Mir Rehman Rehmani wants an open vote over this matter, however, the opponent camp of Kamal Nasir Osoli wants a secret ballot. It has been over a month since the WJ is faced with the gridlock over this matter following troubled election in the house.
These differences erupted when Rehmani and Osoli made it to the second round of voting for the chairmanship over a month ago. The interim chairman of the house, Atta Mohammad Dehqanpur named Rehmani as the winner, but a number of protesting MPs claimed Rehmani has failed to secure the minimum legal requirement of 50 per cent plus 1 vote.
