WJ approves amended law on declaring assets

09/01/2019

KABUL (SW) – The Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Wednesday approved the law on declaration and registration of assets by the government employees and officials with two amendments.

The law was previously approved by the house with 13 chapters and 16 articles, however, the legal and justice affairs commission of the WJ called for amendments in Article 5 and Article 7, which were endorsed today.

Based on the amended bill, the relatives of the government employees and officials are no more required to declare and register their assets.

Masouma Khawari, member of the legal and justice affairs commission, said on the occasion the house has a consensus that the registration of assets by the government employee and officials have nothing to do with father, mother, husband, wife or children of the subject.

Meanwhile, legal experts believe this modification paves way for corruption. Two such experts, Dr. Abdul Kabir Ranjbar and Ajmal Hodman, told Salam Watandar this would mean the corrupt officials would now hide their corruption by registering their unlawfully accumulated assets under the name of their family members. They stressed public officials should remain accountable.

This comes as many of the WJ members have not declared their assets.
