JALALABAD (SW): The Torkham crossing at the Durand line between Afghanistan and Pakistan remained closed on over fencing dispute on Wednesday as well leaving thousands of people stranded on both sides.
A day earlier, the Afghan Border Police (ABP) objected at a move by the Pakistan’s paramilitary Frontier Force to lay barbwire near the crossing at the zero point. In reaction, the Pakistani side insisted that led to escalated tension resulting in closure of the crossing point.
Zabihullah Qazizada, deputy commissioner at Torkham, told Salam Watandar that the move by Pakistani security personnel was against the law. He added that both sides are engaged in talks to ease the situation and open the crossing point for people, eager to enter Pakistan for medical and other needs.
Among the stranded passengers on both sides are a number of ill and aged people who are bearing the brunt of the escalated situation. Some desperate individuals have managed to cross the Shamshad Mountains by foot to enter Afghanistan.
