KABUL (SW) – A while ago, Shahzadgul Aryubi, minister for Telecommunication and Informational Technology, and Humayun Qayumi, advisor to the president, held a meeting at Facebook headquarters in the U.S. over demands of the Afghan government.
Sayer Zaland, spokesman for the MoTIT, informed Salam Watandar the meeting was held over matters related to the culture of Afghanistan, the law enforced here as well as the sanctuary of women at this social media platform. He said the Afghan officials requested the Facebook to handover control over Cache Server to the Kabul government for regulations in this regard.
According to the spokesman for the MoTTI, the government is not pursing to limit the freedom of speech with this move, but, the government wants to be able to regulate Facebook in the country in line with the religious and cultural values and the laws enforced in Afghanistan.
However, a number of IT experts, fear the government seeks to control the free speech in the digital arena. Azizullah Rehmati and Ahmad Joya, two such experts, said the government is aiming to deny the personal space available to the masses in the social media.
