KABUL (SW) – The government inked a new package of grant agreements valued at $403 million with the World Bank on Tuesday.
According to the officials, the new package will finance improvements in primary, secondary and higher education as well as advancing the economic and social standing of rural women. Speaking about the new financing package, acting Finance Minister Humayon Qayoumi said that investing in women empowerment and education programs sets the direct path towards gender equality, poverty reduction, economic growth and higher income.
Shubham Chaudhuri, World Bank Country Director for Afghanistan, said half of school across Afghanistan have no proper buildings forcing children to study under open sky. He added this package would help build schools.
Mohammad Mirwais Balkhi, acting Minister of Education, said on the occasion as many as 7.3 million children would benefit from this project. Officials said part of the project would conclude in two years and the rest in five years.
