KABUL (SW): A number of students protested in Kabul on Wednesday against the abrupt disruption of their studies in southern Uruzgan province.
The protesting students informed Salam Watandar that they were selected for higher education in the province’s Sharia faculty but the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) has suddenly announced that the faculty has not been registered at all. This has led the future of dozens of students in doldrums.
The protesting students, hailing from various provinces, gathered in front of the Ministry of Higher Education and chanted slogans for justice.
Hassamuddin, a Kabul native who succeeded in the university entrance exams for the Sharia faculty in Uruzgan, said that he was informed by the university dean that the faculty is not registered with the MoHE yet. The students urged the government to ensure seats for them in Sharia faculty elsewhere in the country.
Obaidullah Barakzai, Wolesi Jirga (lower house) member from Uruzgan province, said in this regard that the people in this part of the country have similar rights for education and efforts to register the Sharia faculty at the MoHE were made on these lines.
He added that the authorities promised to register the Sharia and economic faculties at the Uruzgan University but unfortunately it has not been done.
Clarifying the stance of the MoHE, Faisal Amin, the spokesman said that the matter is under consultation at the high council within the ministry.
He vowed a decision would be made soon that would take into consideration the issues faced by the students.
