Update: Over 30 FEARED DEAD IN ATTACK ON A MOSQUE

KABUL (SW): Over 30 people are feared to have died and many more wounded following a suicide attack in a mosque in the capital Kabul on Monday.

Fareedon Obaidi, director investigations at the Kabul Police, told Salam Watandar that it was a suicide attack that targeted the Baqar-ul-Ulom Mosque in the western Darul Aman neighborhood. Police and rescue teams rushed to the site minutes after the heavy explosion inside the mosque.

Obaidi added that a private gathering was taking place when the suicide bomber detonated explosives. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

According to the officials at the Ministry of Public Health, more than 30 people have died and many more got wounded in the attack. The Ministry of Interior however, asserts that 27 people lost their lives and 35 other got wounded in this tragic incident. Ismaeel Kawosi, spokesman for the MoPH, has said that the figures provided by the ambulance services suggest 30 lives are lost and 85 more are wounded.

Fareedon Obaidi, director investigations at the Kabul Police, has said that the local people held this private gathering without prior notice to the police. “There was a suicide attacker present inside the mosque who killed 27 of our countrymen and wounded 35 more civilians”, he said.

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has strongly condemned this attack. In a message, Ghani pronounced the attack as an effort to promote hatred and divide among the Afghans. Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah has also condemned the attack while expressing determination to bring the culprits to justice.
