U.S. army re-establishes base in Maidan Wardak

MAIDAN CITY (SW): United States military has re-established the base in Nirkh district of Maidan Wardak province which was previously vacated in former president Hamid Karzai’s tenure by the U.S. army.

Local authorities and residents have said that American military has re-established a small base for an unknown period of time in Nirkh district.

Naqibullah Amini, the spokesman for the provincial governor, told Salam Watandar that the U.S. army has re-established the base to bring security to the area. “In an American led military operation 7 insurgents were killed on Friday night in the area”, added Amini.

A security source who wished to remain anonymous told Salam Watandar that the U.S. base will station 45 American soldiers to help Afghan security forces.

Local residents opposing the return of American military to the area said that in 2013 the U.S. soldiers had killed and tortured residents in Karim Daud area of the district.

Local village dwellers have concerns over the presence of U.S. military in the area as they claim that civilian causalities will be higher than insurgents.
