KABUL (SW): Legendary Pakistani cricketer Inzimam-ul-Haq on Thursday inked a one-year coaching contract with the Afghanistan Cricket Board.
This followed a landmark victory by the Afghan squad against the International Cricket Council ICC’s full member state Zimbabwe last month. Inzimam was first hired as coach for that series alone but the results compelled the ACC to hire him for long term. Afghanistan won the five-match one-day series 3-2 followed by twin wins in as many Twenty20 internationals.
After signing the contract, Inzimam said the Afghan urged the ICC to award full membership to Afghanistan. One of the finest middle order batsmen of his time, Inzimam has no prior coaching experience. Acknowledging this fact, Inzimam said he feels confidence about leading the Afghan side to success.
Nasimullah Danish, Chief Executive of the ACC said on the occasion that this was a major development for a non-ICC member to acquire the services of a world class coach. The former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has played 120 Tests and 388 one-day internationals.
Afghanistan will play Oman, Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea in various matches in the United Arab Emirates later this month before embarking for India to play in the T-20 World Cup.
