Turkmenistan promises to increase electricity supply to Afghanistan

KABUL (SW): Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, the President of Turkmenistan on Thursday vowed to increase the supply of electricity to Afghanistan by five times.

The visiting head of state said this while making a press statement alongside with his Afghan host President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani. Both agreed to enhance ties in various fields. President of Turkmenistan stated his country was ready to cooperate with Afghanistan. He mentioned that work on Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project would soon begin.

“Today, as a result of effective negotiations with Afghanistan, I declare that Turkmenistan is fully ready to cooperate for the train line and in the field of energy with Afghanistan”, he said.

The President of Afghanistan welcomed the announcement.

“The people of Afghanistan look forward to the construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan railway network”, the Afghan President said on the occasion.

Enhanced relations between Afghanistan & Turkmenistan will provide many opportunities for our business community, Ghani added. The Afghan President added that the two heads of state discussed the gas pipeline, electricity distribution project and construction of the railway network.

President of Turkmenistan also vowed to support the peace process in Afghanistan.

Earlier, five Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) for cooperation in the fields of anti-money laundering measures, energy, science and technology, economy and trade were signed.
