Tribal people defy merger of FATA in Pakistan

29/05/2018

KABUL (SW) – Representatives of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas on Tuesday condemned the Pakistani government’s move to merge FATA in its Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Addressing a press conference here, the tribal areas’ representatives said based on the agreements of the former British Raj in united India with  Afghanistan, no side can take such steps unilaterally.

Zar Jan Shinwari, leader of the tribal people, said the international community, the U.N. and civil societies in Pakistan should force the government to reverse its decision. He stressed, the tribal people see themselves as part of Afghanistan, and the decision by the government in Pakistan violates their independence.

Meanwhile, Javed Ahmad Wafa, spokesman for the Ministry of Tribal and Frontier Affairs, has said the Afghan government has already rejected this unilateral move by Pakistan. He said the MoTFA has requested President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani to take measures in streamlining moves against this decision.
