
CHAGCHIRAN (SW) – The levels of underground water have dropped significantly forcing locals to rely on polluted ground water, locals informed.
A number of Ghor residents said the wells they had have dried-up forcing them to drink dirty surface water. They informed many children in the province got sick due to the polluted water.
Ghulam Rasool and Noor Mohammad, two locas, said the residents are deprived of clean drinking water despite having three major rivers, the Harirod, the Murghab and the Farahrod passing through it. The said the provincial authorities have promised to fix the problem of clean drinking water on various occasion, but nothing has been done so far.
Juma Gul Yaqoobi, head of the directorate of public health, informed diseases such as gastroenteritis and throat infections are on the rise here. He said the directorate of health is striving hard to mitigate the damage caused by the unhygienic drinking water.
Spokesman for the provincial governor, Abdul Hai Khatibi, acknowledged the grimness of the situation. He said the provincial administration and non-government agencies are striving since past many years to supply drinking water to the locals, however, interferences have so far hindered the execution of this project.
Residents in Feroz Koh city fear they would have no other option, but to migrate to areas with relatively better sources of under-ground water if the issue is not resolved.
