KABUL (SW): As students and their parents continue to lament the lack of textbooks in public schools, the rampant sale of such books continue in the open market.
In conversation with Salam Watandar, parents of public school students said providing text books is a prime obligation of the government as per law, but they are compelled to buy books in the market despite economic constraints.
Hameedullah, a father of one such student, said it is a known fact to many that books are not provided in schools despite the claims made about it.
Naimatullah, a book seller in Kabul’s Joe Sher area, said in this regard that up to 500 text books are sold here on a good day.
Clarifying the government’s position, Kabir Haqmal, director communication at the Ministry of Education, said the public sector employees are not allowed to print and sale the books otherwise no one else is barred from printing and selling the copies of the text books.
Officials informed up to 49 million copies of text books are in the process of printing, and availability of these books would improve situation to great extent.
