KUNDUZ CITY(SW):During the past ten days, the Kunduz City, capital of northern Kunduz province has seen back to back raids by the Taliban militants following the brief fall of it to the militant but the Police Chief here has now claimed the rebels would not dare attacking.
Mohammad Qasim Jangal Bagh, Police Chief in Kunduz, said that the Taliban would not return to the city again. He said that now the supply routes are open to security forces in Jarshak area in Baghlan and additional forces have been deployed there to thwart any move by the rebels .He further said that the public hospital, Koti Gerd and Balahesar areas have been cleared from Taliban and the mopping up operation and house search continue in the city.
Mohammad Yousuf Ayobi, Head of Kunduz Provincial Council, said that the city has been severely damaged and some 30, 000 families have been displaced. He added that if the displaced families did not receive assistances, catastrophe was imminent.
Haji Saleh, a member of the parliament from Kunduz however, has charged that Kunduz was deliberately handed over to the Taliban by the local officials. He asserted that Kunduz local officials should be sacked and replaced by new ones.
The worsening security situation in northeastern provinces have caused consternation among the locals.
A number of former Jihadi commanders in Takhar province, blamed government for turning a blind eye to the security situation in the northern provinces saying that the government ignores people’s need in terms of security. They warned that if such situation continued, Afghanistan would face a huge crisis.
Salahuddin Rabani, Minister of Foreign Affairs, who has travelled to Takhar, said that people have established defensive council to counter Taliban in Badakhan adding that such council would soon be established in Takhar province as well. He said that these councils would function as coordinator between security forces and the young men who voluntarily step up to fight the militants.
Asmat Qurbani, a member of Takhar Provincial Council, reiterated that government should punish those who justify Taliban’s crimes in Kunduz.
