TALUQAN (SW) – A group of heavily armed Taliban’s red unit killed at least 37 policemen in Takhar province, a well-placed source said on Thursday.
A credible source who wished not to be named in the report said the insurgents attacked security check posts and bases of the security forces in the Ishkimish district. The source added that 24 members of the Afghan National Civil Order Police and 13 members of the Afghan National Police got killed in the assault.
A soldier from the area also confirmed the death toll.
Meanwhile, Jawad Hijri, spokesman for the governor, said a total of 18 people, including civilians have been killed in this attack. Another source in the area said the Taliban took away resources from the site of the attack and torched a Humvee and a pick-up truck of the security forces.
According to the district governor, Qayum Qaneh, the Taliban’s red unit has stationed its fighters in the district, and if a clean-up operation is not launched here soon, the rebels would overrun the district.
Wafiullah Rehmani, chairman for the provincial council, has also confirmed the death toll. He blamed the poor leadership of the security forces for the incident.
