Taliban delegation off to Moscow

13/10/2016

KABUL (SW): A well-placed source has told Salam Watandar that a Taliban delegation led by Mullah Hebatullah has left for Russia presumably for their future war strategy in Afghanistan.

This comes at a time when Pakistani security forces have reportedly detained three senior members of the Taliban’s Quetta Shura. According to the reports, Pakistani forces have detained Mullah Abdul Samad Sani, Taliban’s aide on financial affairs, Sulaiman Agha, Taliban’s self-proclaimed governor for Daikundi and Mullah Abdullah Nanai, the head for Taliban’s Supreme Court.

In the meantime, Zabihullah Mujaheed, the spokesperson for Taliban, has confirmed that Pakistani government has detained Taliban’s senior members in Quetta.

Razaq Barq, Salam Watandar’s correspondent in Pakistan, reported that Pakistani officials have not commented in this regard so far. Commenting on Taliban delegation’s visit to Russia, Kabul Khan Tadbeer, commentator on political affairs, told Salam Watandar that Russia wants to use the Taliban as a force to suppress Daesh in the region. Tadbeer added that Iran and China may also provide military and financial aid to the Taliban against the surging Daesh.

He stated that Russia has developed contacts with the Taliban in all provinces of Afghanistan. He further mentioned that Moscow has provided the Taliban with logistics and modern arms.

Meanwhile, the Afghan officials have not commented in this regard so far. Dawlat Waziri, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense (MoD) has stated that Chechens, Uyghur, Uzbekistanis and Pakistani militants are involved in the ongoing fight in Afghanistan. He noted that Taliban’s use of Kalashnikov doesn’t necessarily mean that they are backed by Russia.

Mahmud Haidari, a commentator on security affairs, believed that Taliban’s visit to Moscow is related to the arrest of senior members of Quetta Shura in Pakistan. He added that the delegation might have gone to Moscow to negotiate the possible release of these three senior members in Pakistan.
