KUNDUZ CITY (SW): The Taliban militants’ attacks on the Khan Abad and Chahar Dara districts in northern Kunduz province have been thwarted.
Latest reports from the province suggest fighting is still underway in a number of areas close to the strategically important Sher Khan port.
Gen. Mohammad Qaseem Jungle Bagh, the police chief in the province has said that 18 armed rebels have been killed in these offensives so far. He mentioned that the Taliban wished to blow-up Pul-e-Alchin, an import connecting point to the Sher Khan Port, but enough personnel of the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) have been deployed to secure this strategic area.
The Kunduz Police Chief claimed that the notorious Taliban commander Qari Zabehi is among the militants killed in the ANSF’s offensives. He claimed that a successful operation against the militants in Imam Saheb district compelled the rebels to escape and eventually attack on Khan Abad and Chahar Dara.
Due to the militants’ latest attacks on check posts, the Kunduz-Takhar highway was closed for traffic. The police chief, however, claims it has been reopened.
