GARDEZ (SW): Due to the negligence of local officials, thousands of students in Paktia province remained deprived of textbooks for four years.
Luqman Hakeem Hakimi, acting director for education in the province, told Salam Watandar the previous administration kept the textbooks locked in containers for all those years. He noted at least 90 thousand textbooks remained locked in containers. He categorically charged former officials at the education directorate for the issue.
The acting director went on to say that at least 22 thousand ghost students have been identified after a long process. He also claimed to have re-opened the previously closed seven schools in the province.
The local community has long been calling for reforms in the education sector here. Mumtaz Karkhail, member of the provincial council, told Salam Watandar appointment of qualified people in the education directorate is absolutely essential for reforms in this sector.
According to reports, Paktia has some 335 registered schools in which 145 thousands students, including 36 thousand female, are enrolled.
