Security Roundup: 72 rebels killed, 30 ALP men liberated

KABUL/ TARINKOT (SW): During the past 24 hours the government forces has claimed to have killed 72 armed rebels while some 30 Afghan Local Police (ALP) were airlifted from a Taliban’s siege in the southern Uruzgan province.

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) said on Sunday joint operations eliminated 41 rebels across the country. The Afghan National Police (ANP) conducted several anti-terrorism joint operations with Afghan National Army (ANA) and the National Directorate of Security (NDS) to clear some of the areas from terrorists and enemies of peace and stability of Afghanistan, it said.

“The operations were conducted in Nangarhar, Baghlan, Kunduz, Faryab, Sar-e-Pul, Kandahar, Zabul, Oruzgan, Maidan Wardak and Ghazni provinces, as a result 41 armed insurgents were killed, eight wounded and 19 others were arrested”, the MoI added.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) has announced the death of 28 more rebels in various operations. It added operations were conducted in Paktiya, Paktika, Uruzgan, Kandahar, Helmand and Nangarhar provinces. Taliban Commanders Mulla Talib and Abu Zarqawi are said be among the dead. 

Early on Sunday, a group of militants attacked security check post in eastern Nooristan’s Do Aab district. Latest reports suggest the fighting killed three attackers and one ANP man. Farooq Khan, Spokesman for the Provincial Police Department told SW that the fighting was still on.

Separately, a group of some 30 Afghan Local Police (ALP) men have finally been evacuated from Taliban’s siege in the southern Uruzgan province. Abdul Basir, head of the local ALP unit in the Khas Uruzgan district told SW they were occupied by the Taliban for over two months.

Afghan Air Force airlifted the ALP men. Basir said their resistance has so far killed more than 40 armed rebels against the loss of 8 ALP men and 10 civilians. The ALP Commander they were forced to eat grass as the militants cut their supply line.

He claimed the Air Force destroyed the arms, ammunition and vehicles left behind so that the rebels could not use them.
