Schools in Badakhshan reopen in the areas under Taliban

FAIZABAD (SW): A number of schools in the areas under the influence of the Taliban in north eastern Badakhshan province have re-opened for the new academic year.

The armed rebels have released a statement and have urged upon the residents to send their children to school.

Abdullah Naji, a member at Badakhshan provincial council, told Salam Watandar that schools have been reopened in the areas under the militants’ influence and both girls and boys can attend them. He said that the textbooks’ content has not been changed either. He said that Taliban have assigned one of their men called Qari Mahbullah as the Head of Education Department and this guy monitors the schools’ curriculum in the areas under their control.

Sakhidad, the Police Chief in the province, however said that the militants seek to instil fanatic thoughts into the minds of students. He said that the education process in not normal in these schools and Taliban try to achieve their own objectives by reopening the schools.

Salam Watandar’s tried to reach the officials at the official education department in Badakhshan but to no avail.
