‘Safer Internet Day’ marked in Kabul

KABUL (SW): The importance of parental control for children was highlighted in a moot today in Kabul in connection with the ‘Safer Internet Day’ on Tuesday.

Speakers in a conference today (Tuesday) said the Afghan children and teenagers are more vulnerable while using the internet. They asked the families and parents to use secure internet browsers with parental controls for their children.

Ezmarlai Wafa, a member of the board of directors of the Afghan Internet Community, said children and teenagers in Afghanistan have no plans for the internet surfing, and have often been targeted by cyber criminals, which is an issue of concern.

Urfanullah Sapi, head of technology at the Ministry of Education, said the MoE has taken steps to secure the internet.

Mushtaq Rahin, a father, said youngsters have been recruited by terrorist groups through the internet, and families should not take this lightly, and should prevent their kids from accessing the sites which are perilous for their upbringing.

According to the speakers, the government has failed to create a safer and better internet where everyone uses technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively to make the most of the internet's potential to bring people together.

Afghanistan has approximately 3 million internet users. Many surf the web for passing time only without a proper plan to make the best use of it, and also without concerning about its security and safer environment.
