KABUL (SW): The NATO led Resolute Support Mission on Monday condemned a militant attack on near the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul that killed a civilian and hurt at least 13 civilians.
“A Taliban group has once again targeted defenseless Afghan civilians, showing their complete disregard for the Afghan people,” said Brig. Gen. Wilson Shoffner, Resolute Support Spokesperson. “On behalf of General Campbell, our thoughts are with the victims of this attack and the families and friends of those killed.”
The U.N. attributed 70% of all civilian casualties directly to terrorists in the first half of 2015. Not including today’s attack, there have been approximately 6,500 civilian deaths and injuries caused by insurgent attacks in 2015, the RS Spokesman added.
Police in Kabul has said that a suicide attacked killed one civilian and injured 13 more. Three women were among the wounded.
Abdul Rahman Rahimi, the Kabul Police Chief, said that the suicide bomber blew-up his explosive-laden car among the crowd.
Ghulam Nabi, Head of Emergency Ward at the Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital, has said that the explosion left 13 civilians injured who have been shifted to the hospital with critical conditions.
Abdul Rab, an Imam at a nearby mosque which was also damaged, said that more than 50 students were at the mosque at the time of the explosion and many have been injured.
Eye witnesses said that the blast was so intense. Ahmad Fawad, one of the residents in the area, said that the car bomb aimed a Turkish military convoy. He said that he saw two dead bodies at the scene.
Zabiullah Mujahid, Taliban Spokesman, claiming responsibility for the blast said that the attack was aimed at foreign forces’ convoy. He also claimed that a number of foreign forces have killed and injured in the blast.
