KABUL (SW): Top Commander of the Resolute Support Mission (RSM) in Afghanistan has met the victims of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) hospital attack and apologized for the deadly incident.
U.S. Army’s General John W. Nicholson acknowledged that this attack resulted from a number of human and technical errors, and he deeply regrets it. Gen. Nicholson told the relatives of the victims that he was deeply hurt and saddened over the painful human error that led to a number of civilian casualties.
On 3 October 2015, a United States Air Force AC-130U gunship attacked the Kunduz Trauma Centre operated by the MSF or Doctors Without Borders in the city of Kunduz. It has been reported that at least 42 people were killed and over 30 were injured.
The US military initially stated the airstrike was carried out to defend U.S. forces on the ground. Later, the United States commander in Afghanistan, General John Campbell, stated the airstrike was requested by Afghan forces that had come under Taliban fire.
Accompanying Gen. Nicholson and a number of Afghan security officials,Masoum Stanikzai, the acting minister of defence, said that ongoing operation would clean the province of the rebels.
