HERAT CITY (SW) – In a bizarre development, a religious leader in Herat province has issued a ‘fatwa’ (religious decree) encouraging people to kill media workers in the country.
Holding media responsible for corruption, Fazal-ur-Rehma, prayer leader in the Khwaja Abdullah Ansari mosque, has also criticized President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani for not being able to control the media. He has pronounced those religious scholars with ties to the media houses as ‘corrupt and servants’.
The prayer leader of this mosque in Herat has also condemned the first lady, Rula Ghani, as a ‘Jew’ and those considering her as the first lady 'having fragile belief’. These views have sparked anger among media fraternity.
Nai – Supporting Open Media organization has called for actions against this man by security agencies and officials at the council of religious and haj affairs.
Local journalists, Khushal Sailab and Naseer Feroz, have said preaching of such violent views against the journalists are alarming.
Meanwhile, Jailani Farhad, spokesman for the provincial governor, has clarified such views are clearly against the law, and no one has the right to impose such personal views against media.
