MIHTARLAM (SW): Civil society activists and local elders in eastern Laghman province have called for the prosecution of provincial governor over alleged criminal acts.
In a gathering on Wednesday, the men asserted that the supporters of governor Abdul Jabar Naemi are involved in killing innocent people and encroaching land. They charged the governor for running an army of armed criminals. The locals went on to say that the governor’s men have also beaten women and children and taken men into illegal custody.
Aashiqullah, a local elder told the gathering that the Afghan Local Police (ALP)’s commanders in the area want to prove their loyalty to the governor by persecuting the poor residents.
Meanwhile, Sarhadi Zwak, spokesman for the provincial governor, discarded the allegations. He told Salam Watandar that the governor approved to reclaim state lands encroached in the province’s Baba Saheb desert and township earmarked for the teachers.
He added that the protesters are actually backed by armed gangs behind land grabbing. Zwak said that the protesters wants to defame the governor in a bid to hide their wrongdoings.
