09/03/2018

KABUL (SW): Recently, the hashtag I protest, “#Iprotest” campaign has been launched on social media pages especially Facebook, and the number of protesters has been increasing.

With this hashtag, women have said that they are protesting masculine symbols and sexual discrimination which has made the environment for them hard-to-live.

Sahar Fitrat, one of the activists on Facebook said on her “#iprotest” that “to the manly cities and streets of yours, to the women oppressive media and ads, to the contempt and insult to our feminine body, and to stereotypical slogans and demonstrations for women, I protest”.

Sahar Fitrat said, previously, the protest against the discrimination of women in Afghanistan was specific to a situation and event, however, currently it has been decided that with their protest and raising their voices, women can bring their protest to the attention of others.

“We always try to neglect the problem, whether a traditional or nontraditional society, the question is that we have a male-dominated society and cannot ignore it”, Sahar Fitrat said.

Mitra Alakozai, another user of “#iprotest” said, “I protest because I am ignored because I am silenced; I protest the sexual look of the men on the streets; I protest that I am confined so that the men of this city should not lose their religion and faith”.

Laila Haidary, a civil society activist is also seen in this campaign. Laila Haidari wrote on her Facebook page: “I protest against your manly cities, the male-dominated structure of your government and non-government agencies, your women oppressive laws, policies and xenophobia, to your gender discriminative educational centers, to women with their male-dominated beliefs, … I protest”.

This campaign has spiked on March 8, and the number of users has been increasing since then. Protesters are campaigning to eliminate discrimination against women.
