24/05/2018

TAKHAR (SW): Hundreds of Takhar residents poured on the streets of Taliqan city this morning and demanded to stop the distribution of the electronic National Identity Cards (eNIC) with the word “Afghan” printed on it.

The protesters chanted the slogan “we are not Afghan” and “our ethnic identity must be included in the eNIC”, and called for an end to the distribution of eNIC with the word “Afghan” on it.

The protesters claimed that the process of distributing eNIC is managed and controlled by a “fascist group” and called on the government to respect the public demand in this regard.

One of the protesters, Farzad Majidpoor said that no group has the right to impose their own identity on other people.

Akram Kargar, the former governor of Takhar who was among the protesters said the National Unity Government under the leadership of Mohammad Ashraf Ghani is “the most oppressive government” in the history of Afghanistan.

Asmat Qurbani, a member of Takhar Provincial Council said that if the distribution of the eNIC is not stopped, it would bring the country to war, and they are ready to fight the oppressors.

The protesters also broadcasted the national anthem of the Mujahedeen era and demanded the renaming of Afghanistan to Khorasan, the name of the country before it became Afghanistan.

Previously, residents of Balkh, Badakhshan, and Panjshir have also protested the printing of the word “Afghan” on the eNIC and according to rumors in the coming days; several other protests will also take place in other cities across the country to protest the distribution of the eNIC with the word "Afghan" printed on the face of it.
