25/02/2019

KABUL (SW) – President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani is set to issue decree soon on calling the consultative ‘Loya Jirga’ council on peace in the country.

Mohammad Umer Daudzai, secretary for the High Peace Council, told this today to a presser in connection with the peace process. He said up to 2000 delegates are set to attend this grand assembly with up to 1100 joining from different provinces and close to 900 from the capital Kabul. He said the ceremonial chairman would be appointed for the maiden day by the President, however, the delegates would vote for the chair the following day.

Daudzai said the HPC would have a key role to play in the forthcoming Kabul Process Conference, which would also take into consideration the views of masses expressed by their representatives at the Loya Jirga. The HPC Secretary said the purpose behind this consultative session is to achieve national consensus over sustainable peace.

He added another main purpose of this consultative session is to give chance to representatives of different ethnic and political groups to have their say for sustainable peace in the country. He hoped the Loya Jirga would consider national interests and not compromise the gains of the past 18 years as well as helping the HPC form a unified peace strategy.

He reiterated President Ghani has offered unconditional peace talks to the Taliban, however, the ultimate peace would be based on certain conditions. Daudzai urged the Loya Jirga participants to pay attention to certain aspects of peace during the consultative session.

The HPC Secretary said it is difficult to have regional consensus, however, coordination can be improved for peace in Afghanistan, and globally there is a consensus for the peaceful settlement of the Afghan conflict.
