KABUL (SW) – The family members and friends of victims of the 40-year-old war were once again in tears as a new exhibition brought back memories of their loved ones.
February 15 marks the 30th anniversary of the withdrawal of the Soviet forces from Afghanistan. This comes as Afghanistan continues to long for peace.
In this connection, the Afghanistan Human Rights and Democracy Organization (AHRDO) established a permanent exhibition in Kabul to exhibit the stories of the victims. The pictures, clothes, shoes and other belongings of the victims are there for visitors to see and think. It took the organizers up to eight years to gather these belongings.
School shoes and bag are also on display of one of the young victims of the ragging war.
Hadi Marifat, head of the AHRDO, said the purpose behind this event is to highlight the forgotten scars of the war, and push for peace. He added the 40 years of war has wreaked havoc, and denied the right of a dignified life to millions of people in Afghanistan.
He lamented throughout all these years, there was no comprehensive plan to address the war victims and their families, and in fact efforts were made to overlook the atrocities and sacrifices.
Sima Samar, the head of Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, welcomed the opening of the exhibition. She said that efforts to overlook the victims would never help with peace. She said support to the victims would help with promoting justice.
According to her, a peaceful future cannot be ensured without healing the wounds of the past.
The AHRDO plans to establish similar exhibitions in different provinces as well.
