KABUL (SW) – The U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan, John Bass, has said peace and elections are equally important, but truce remains a priority for Washington.
He said this as the U.S. and the Taliban resumed seventh round of talks in the Qatari capital, Doha on Saturday.
Addressing a presser in Kabul on Saturday, he said no one wants to see bloodshed during the polls while war rages on across the country. Ambassador Bass expressed hope the seventh round of talks in Qatar would pave wave for intra-Afghan dialogue for peace.
He said nothing can be said for sure about success of the seventh round of talks, however, Afghans shall prepare for intra-Afghan dialogue with the Taliban so that rights of the parties involved are secured.
The U.S. diplomat stressed the withdrawal of foreign troops depends on conditions and time, and the Taliban cannot have a timetable in this regard.
