KABUL (SW): The National Unity Government (NUG) has expressed resolve to go ahead with an international conference in the capital Kabul for peace in the country.
Dawa Khan Menapal, deputy spokesman for the president, told Salam Watandar representatives from some 24 countries from around the world would participate in this conference. The core objective of this meeting is to streamline all scattered initiatives and contacts on the national and international levels for peace with the Taliban, and galvanize it into a single ‘Afghan-led and Afghan-own’ process for peaceful resolution of the conflict.
Earlier this week, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met with foreign ambassador, members of the international community and the UN at his office in this regard. A statement issued by Arg (President Palace) on Friday expressed the government’s resolve to launch 'Kabul Process' for building inclusive peace. “Afghanistan has a strategic location that links South Asia with Central Asia and Europe. The terrorists want to insecure Afghanistan to eventually destabilize the region and the world”, Ghani told the meeting.
On Saturday, U.S. Ambassador Hugo Llorens also underlined the significance of this conference. June 6 offers another opportunity to send that message, as the National Unity Government hosts an unprecedented multilateral gathering of regional stakeholders for the Kabul Process Conference to discuss security, peace and reconciliation, and economic development, he said. The conference will be a visible reminder to all those who seek to harm Afghanistan that the Afghan people are never alone, especially in the wake of last week’s attack. As always, the United States, along with all of Afghanistan’s partners, remains shoulder-to-shoulder with our Afghan brothers and sisters in pursuit of a brighter tomorrow for all, he added.
