JALALABAD (SW): Authorities in Nangarhar have said cross-border shelling has been underway from Pakistan into Afghanistan since last night.
The Lal Pur district of the province bordering Pakistan's tribal Momand Agency is said to be the target of the shelling. A local elder told Salam Watandar the shelling is still underway, and many families have fled their homes.
Mohammad Ayub, commander of the Afghan Border Police (ABP) in the area, has said dozens of families have left their homes due to the shelling. He added Pakistani forces are busy in military operation near this area across the Durand Line.
This comes as Pakistan has closed its Torkham crossing point with Afghanistan following a suicide attack in a Sufi shrine in Pakistan which killed over 70 people. Mohammad Ayub, the Commander of he ABP in the east, has said talks are underway for the opening of the crossing point.
