PUL-I-ALAM (SW): Authorities in Logar said on Sunday a record number of girls have applied to serve as teachers in this eastern province.

The Provincial Education department has announced 250 slots for teachers. Some 1000 applicants have applied for the posts, 250 of which are female. Mohammad Akbar Stanikzai, head of the education department said that soon the appointment process would be initiated in this regard. “These new appointments would lift the level of literacy phenomenally in this part of the country”, he said.

Addressing a gathering in the regard here, Haleem Fidai, the provincial governor admitted education sector has suffered heavily due to poor security situation. He said education sector tops his priorities in his 100-day plan. Last month, a SW exclusive story revealed that a district in Logar produced just one high-school graduate in over a decade.

The education department in Logar took written tests from interested candidates for the posts. Some applicants however, argued that prevailing corruption in various departments including the education department often overshadow such tests and nepotism plays its role in the appointments.
