SHARANA (SW): Three districts with an estimated population of over 100 thousand in southeastern Paktika province have been under siege by the Taliban for days now.
Afsar Khan Sulaimankhail, head of the provincial council has confirmed the report saying resident of Wor Mamay, Waza Khwa and Terwa districts are cut-off from rest of the country. He said a 50kg bag of wheat now costs up to afn 3000 owing to dearth of fresh supplies.
The government forces are engaged in battles with the rebels in the Waza Khwa of the province for the past three days. According to the locals, the militants have blocked roads leading to the provincial capital Sharana and other cities in the vicinity such as Ghazni and Zabul.
Sharifullah, a resident of Waza Khwa told Salam Watandar that the population is faced with extreme shortage of food items. The security forces too, have urged the central government to provide them aerial support in crushing the rebels.
Amanullah, an officer at the Border Post informed that the forces lack the arms and ammunition to swiftly ward-off the Taliban. He feared a catastrophe would emerge if the authorities failed to act in time.
