PUL-I-ALAM (SW): The Women Affairs Department in Logar province has said there is only one specialist doctor available for women in the whole province.

Sheema Zargar, head of this department told Salam Watandar this situation has multiplied health problems for women in this province. She said considering the population of this province, one gynecologist was not enough. Sheema noted that a number of patients and newborn children have lost lives due to the lack of a specialist doctor.

According to the Women Affairs Department head, situation was even worst in faraway restive districts like Azara, Baraki Barak, Kharwar and Sarkh. Official figures suggest there is only one female specialist doctor, four general female practitioners, 14 nurses and 59 midwives in the whole province.

The Public Health Department in Logar acknowledges the dearth of female doctors in this province.

Dr. Mohammad Zarif, head of the Logar Health Department told Salam Watandar that insecurity and low pay were also the reason behind this problem. He added that the province had two female specialists but one was on holidays.

In the eyes of Mursal and Marzia, two female residents of Logar, pregnant women in the far away districts were facing serious problems due to the lack of female doctors.

All in all, the local health department has developed two hospitals and 40 clinics across the province. One of the public hospitals however, remains seriously damaged following a deadly car bombing two months ago in the provincial capital Pul-i-Alam.
