Lower salaries result in policemen quitting jobs in Khost

22/11/2017

KHOST CITY (SW): Hundreds of policemen in Khost have left their jobs due to lower wages causing concerns about the security situation here.

Few months back, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani directed the move citing relatively peaceful security situation, a move that has now resulted in policemen quitting jobs, and seeking alternate ways of income.

Two such policemen, who wished not to be named, told Salam Watandar they were unable to meet the requirements of their daily lives with the salaries of policemen. One of them said he joined the ranks of the police in a bid to serve the nation, but economic constraints forced him to quit the job and work as a rickshaw driver instead. Another former policeman, who is now working in brick kilns as laborer, said many more policemen are likely to quit their jobs if their salaries are not increased.

A policeman was withdrawing AFN 11,800 monthly salary before the reduction to AFN 10,300.

According to the information provided by the commandment of the recruitment, up to 100 policemen have quit their jobs due to low salaries.

Meanwhile, Faizullah Gherat, police chief for Khost, has rejected the perception about policemen quitting jobs. He said an increase in their salaries is on the cards, and more and more men are eager to join the ranks of police. He added, salaries of the police are likely to increase by AFN 2500 soon.
