KABUL (SW): The National Security Council has decided to not only physically target the Taliban militants but also curb their financial resources.
Tawab Gorzang, spokesman for the NSC said this at a press conference on Sunday alongside the spokesmen for the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Defense. Gorzang said that the security organs would quell the sources of income for the militants that are used to wage terror in the country.
He noted that the main sources of income for the Taliban remain illicit mining, drug trafficking and poppy cultivation. “The government of Afghanistan has decided to cut the resources of the militants including that coming from the mining sector and poppy cultivation”, he said.
Dawlat Waziri, spokesman for the Ministry of Defense, said on the occasion that the Afghan Air Force (AAF) has become stronger and effective to eliminate the rebels.
He noted that in the last one week, the AAF has conducted some 622 raids. “We have PC 12 Bomber plans that allow us to monitor the ground from air even at night, so we can monitor areas in Helmand from Kabul as well”, he said.
The spokesman said that the Taliban are on the run in Helmand, Uruzgan and Kunduz where the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) has inflicted heavy losses on them.
Siddiq Siddiqi, Spokesman for the Ministry of Interior said on his term that the ANSF are conducting raids against the rebels on daily basis in the restive parts of the country. Siddiqi claimed that heavy casualties have been inflicted upon the militants in Helmand and Kunduz provinces.
