No voter registration center in 5 Baghlan districts

21/05/2018

PUL-I-KHUMRI (SW): The voter registration drive entered fifth day in Baghlan on Monday, but there is no corresponding activity in up to five districts here so far.

The registration centers are not open in Dahn-e-Ghori and Tala Wa Barfat districts due to insecurity while floods have led to their closure in Khost, Farang and Guzar Gah districts. The locals are angry towards the government for not doing enough to open these centers, and provide the locals opportunities to cast their votes in the forthcoming district and parliamentary elections.

Sher Agha and Mohammad Akbar, two residents of the Khost district in the province, informed there are at least 90 thousand eligible voters here, and the government would lose legitimacy in their eyes if it failed to safeguard their right to vote.

Mohammad Usman Sherzai, leader of the local civil society organization, has warned the prevailing situation would lead to dangerous circumstances.

In the meantime, the provincial chapter of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) has confirmed the voter registration centers are active in only nine districts here. Malik Hanafi, provincial head of the IEC, has vowed efforts are underway to open the registration centers across the province.

According to the officials, so far up to 7000 potential voters have registered with the IEC in Baghlan.
