KABUL (SW): The NATO-led Resolute Support Mission (RSM) has confirmed the loss of two service members in an apparent green-on-blue attack in the southern Helmand province on Wednesday.
The RSM said in an unclassified message that the service members died early this morning when two individuals wearing Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) uniforms opened fire on their vehicle at the compound in Helmand province.
Resolute Support service members returned fire and killed the shooters, it added.
According to the communiqué, Afghan and Resolute Support officials are reviewing the incident and further information will be released as available and appropriate. It is Resolute Support policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities.
Such insider attacks have drastically declined compared to the past. Earlier in April, an Afghan soldier opened fire on US troops in eastern Afghanistan, killing one and wounding several more. That was the second of its kind recorded this year.
