MPs vow to resolve the impasse at the WJ

17/06/2019

KABUL (SW) – A number of Wolesi Jirga (lower house) members on Monday expressed hope the lingering issue over the chairmanship would be resolved tomorrow.

In today’s session, MPs Nelofar Ibrahimi and Mohammad Ali Akhlaqi, said the house is set to determine the fate of the disputed one vote in Tuesday’s session.

It is said that the camp of Mir Rehman Rehmani wants an open vote over this matter, however, the opponent camp of Kamal Nasir Osoli wants a secret ballot.

It has been over a month since the WJ is faced with the gridlock over this matter following troubled election in the house.

However, MPs close to Rehmani assert that he is the chairman of the house, and any contrasting decision by the house would be against the internal rules of the house. One such MP Ziauddin Zia said this matter has long been resolved for good, and any changes would be illegal.

These differences erupted when Rehmani and Osoli made it to the second round of voting for the chairmanship over a month ago. The interim chairman of the house, Atta Mohammad Dehqanpur named Rehmani as the winner, but a number of protesting MPs claimed Rehmani has failed to secure the minimum legal requirement of 50 per cent plus 1 vote.
