Motorcycles cause surge in road accidents

KANDAHAR CITY (SW): An evident surge in road accidents involving motorcycles have been witnessed in various parts of the country involving the two-wheelers.

At least one person has been confirmed dead and up to 100 more injured due to tens of traffic accidents in Kandahar province during the three-day Eid festivities.

According to the medical sources at the Mirwais Regional Public Hospital, one dead body and up to 104 people with injuries have been brought to the hospital from Sunday till Tuesday. Hospital sources said 12 people are in critical state. An overwhelming majority of these accidents took place in Kandahar city. “Most of the accidents are caused by over speeding motorcycles. Such a high number of road accidents during the Eid days make our work even more difficult”, a doctor at the MRPH said.

Abdul Hadi, one of the victims of road accidents, said he was riding a motorcycle that lost its balance resulting in serious injuries. Col. Mohammadullah Khan, director for traffic in the province, blamed that people let minors in the family to drive cars and motorcycles that add to traffic woes in the province. “In a bid to lower the graph of accidents, we have also provided driving training to a number of people”, he said.

Elsewhere, up to 280 people got injured and 2 lost their lives due to road accidents, street crimes and toy guns in Herat province. Mohammad Rafique, the spokesman for the Herat Regional Public Hospital (HRPH), informed that 169 got injured due to road accidents and 65 more sustained injuries due to street crimes. He said such cases surged by 30 per cent in comparison to the past year.

HRPH sources informed that up to 15 people have died in some 1000 road accidents this year so far.

Just like Kandahar, most traffic accidents in Herat involved motorcycles.
