KABUL (SW): 20 more dead bodies of Afghan immigrants who drowned near Greece while trying to enter Europe, were brought to Kabul on Saturday.
The drowned who embarked on the risky journey abroad two months ago, belonged to two families based in Kabul.
Relatives of the deceased immigrants said that poverty, lack of security and aspirations for a better life abroad have been the reason for most of the Afghans seeking refuge abroad.
Out of the 20 dead, 14 belonged to one family while 6 belong to another family. Women and 5 children were also among those who were drowned.
Haqnawaz Haqyar, an official at Hamid Karzai’s International Airport, said that the victims had initially left for Iran and later entered Turkey illegally, but eventually failed to make it to their final destinations in Europe.
According to some reports, 154 thousand Afghans left for Germany last year, but not all were accepted as refugees in Germany.
German Ambassador to Afghanistan has recently said that most of the Afghan immigrants have voluntarily agreed to return to their country.
Reports suggest that Afghans make the second highest numbers of asylum seekers entering Europe, particularly Germany.
