KABUL (SW): Analysts fear the ‘Mother of All Bombs’ (MOAB) used in Achin, Nangarhar could cause health complications.
Kazim Humayon, environment expert, talking to Salam Watandar said such bombs carry environmental hazards. He said such bombs contain elements such as lead, cadmium and mercury, which cause diseases like cancer, respiratory and digestive problems, the embryonic deformation, stroke, high blood pressure and poor vision. He said that the use of the MOAB in Nangarhar has caused contamination of the food chain for local residents, and their future generations will also face the impacts of it. “Government should send environmental experts to assess the drinking water sources of the Achin district”, said Humayon.
Said Jafar Ahmadi, a psychologist, told Salam Watandar the use of MOAB in Achin district will cause mental illness to the locals. The locals have been having bad dreams ever since the MOAB was dropped on Achin district. According to this psychologist, the mental illness caused by such bombs is not easily treated.
Officially known as a GBU-43B, or massive ordnance air blast weapon, the MOAB was tested after the Iraq invasion in 2003, but the deadliest non-nuclear is used for the first time in history in Afghanistan against the Daesh.
