KABUL (SW) – After a prolonged political crisis, Mir Rehman Rehmani, finally got elected as speaker for the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Saturday.
In the fourth round of voting, Mir Rehman Rehmani and Khan Mohammad Wardak were competing for the speakership. In the three previous rounds, no candidate was able to win the minimum requirement of 50 percent plus one vote.
On Saturday, 245 members were present and the minimum requirement for victory was 123 votes. Rehmani won 136 votes while his opponent Wardak won 96 votes.
In his maiden speech, the newly-elected speaker urged the MPs to regularly attend the sessions so that the election for the administrative board are not faced with glitches. His opponent, Khan Mohammad Wardak vowed support for the new speaker.
In the previous sessions, Rehmani secured 123 votes in the second round while Wardak earned 105 votes in the third round of voting.
