Minister Paikar referred to the AG over corruption charges

14/01/2020

KABUL (SW) – Salam Watandar has learnt President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani referred interim head for the Ministry of Land and Urban Development to the Attorney General’s office over corruption charges.

The charge sheet leveled against Jawad Paikar, interim minister, suggests he has appointed individuals at key posts out of rules and regulation, and bought properties in Turkey in a ‘questionable manner’. According to the letter sent to the AG, Paikar’s name has been put on the Exit Control List, and investigations launched into the allegations.

The letter with signatures of the Assistant Attorney General, Noor Habib Jalal, further suggests that the accused minister has also been referred to the Directorate for Counter Corruption.

When contacted, Hashmatullah Nasiri, spokesman for the Ministry of Land and Urban Development, told Salam Watandar that the AG office has reacted in a rush, and the President is likely to issue two fresh decrees to remove some allegations in this charge sheet.

We wished to have the views of the presidency in this connection, but to no avail.

There has been a buzz in the social media over differences between President Ghani and minister Paikar of late.
