KABUL (SW) – The third Annual Mayors’ Conference was held at Arg (presidential palace) to share expertise on municipal affairs.
The conference deliberated on ways and means to promote cooperation and collaboration among municipalities and private sector.
President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani acknowledged the shortcomings in terms of legalities and capacities in municipalities that cause troubles to the citizens. He said lack of proper legislations has led to the encroachment of public land. He added a clear legal framework would allow and encourage the private sector to invest in cities.
The president added there is a need to promote urban governance in line with the peoples’ choices, and the urban planning ideas adopted from different cities of the world should be altered in line with the conditions of Afghanistan.
Addressing the moot, Abdul Mateen Baig, head of the Independent Directorate of Local Governance, said local councils have been formed on municipal level for better implementation of projects.
