BADAKHSHAN (SW): In recent years, the residents of Badakhshan province have developed an interest in bee-keeping, establishing bee-keeping farms across the province. However, the lack of potential market for honey is one of the main challenges the beekeepers have been facing.
Mubariz, a beekeeper in Faizabad city of Badakhshan said their beekeeping farm yields 2100 kg honey per year, but due to the lack of a market for the sale, their profit margin is substantially low.
According to him, the lack of supplies for beekeeping and lack of government support has led them to purchase a large portion of the beekeeping equipment from Pakistan on their own budget.
Meanwhile, beekeepers in Badakhshan told Salam Watandar that importing the low-quality honey into Badakhshan’s market has caused their prices to decline due to the purchasing power of the customers.
Mohammad Alam Alemi, head of Directorate of Agriculture in this province said the local government is planning to train the beekeepers in packaging and creating a logo showing the product of Badakhshan so that the customers purchase with confidence.
Alemi added that plans are underway to market Badakhshan’s “Honey”, including the launch of several exhibitions and creating a proper marketing strategy.
